Episode 1 · Quick, science-backed wind-down
Maya: Better sleep is often less about finding one magic trick and more about giving your body clear signals: a steady schedule, a cool, dark room, a little routine, and somewhere to put the day’s stress. Ezra: Which is great, because my usual signal is, “Hey brain, here’s that awkward thing from 2014.” Very restful. Maya: Soft laugh. Let’s give your brain a different job. Try one cycle of 4-7-8 breathing. Deep breathing can help prepare the body for sleep by slowing things down. Ezra: Okay, Maya’s driving. I will try not to turn this into competitive breathing. Maya: Gently breathe in through your nose for four... one, two, three, four. Hold for seven... one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Then exhale slowly for eight... one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Ezra: Honestly, that exhale is like telling your shoulders, “You’re off the clock.” Maya: Exactly. Next, progressive muscle relaxation. Briefly tense a muscle, then release it. That contrast can help you notice where you’re holding tension. Ezra: Quick head-to-toe version? Maya: Yes. Soften your forehead. Squeeze your shoulders up... and let them drop. Clench your hands... release. Tighten your belly... release. Press your legs and feet gently... and let them go. Ezra: And tonight’s seven-minute blueprint: warm wash or bath, a few pages of a book in low light, then no screens. Maya: Keep the room cool, dark, and quiet, and aim for the same bedtime and wake time each day. I’ve had restless nights too... small routines really do help. Ezra: Sleep gently, friends. Maya: Good night.
