Episode 1 · Mentor, Listen, and Manage Anger — 2 Minutes
Maya: If you want women to stay, don't wait for a giant culture initiative. Tomorrow, you can start with three small moves: mentoring, better listening, and calmer conflict. Evan: Ah yes, the glamorous management toolkit: a calendar invite, a question, and not making a tense moment worse. Maya: Honestly? Powerful. First, woman-to-woman mentoring. Pair a senior woman with a junior woman for a monthly 30 to 45 minute chat. Career paths, sponsorship cues, the unwritten rules... the stuff nobody puts in onboarding. Evan: Keep it a pilot, please. One department, three months. Track participation and one retention-related measure. Otherwise, “we love mentoring” becomes a decorative sentence. Maya: Exactly. And don't make the mentor magically responsible for fixing the whole organization. It's guidance, connection, perspective. Evan: Second, when someone brings you a problem, don't sprint toward a solution. Ask, “Do you want empathy or ideas?” Maya: That little question is gold. Empathy can be, “That sounds frustrating. I can see why that landed badly.” Not, “Well, here's what you should do.” Evan: And if they say ideas, then earn your spreadsheet. Maya: Third, anger. Managers, intervene early. Try: “I can hear this is frustrating. The raised voices aren't working. Let's take this privately and agree on a next step.” Evan: Acknowledge the emotion, name the behavior, offer a private follow-up, agree the next move. Short. Repeatable. Less courtroom drama. Maya: Three small practices, more room for people to contribute and stay. Evan: Try one tomorrow. We'll be cheering you on. Maya: See you next time.
