Episode 1 · The Rabbit, the Rain, and a Small Choice
Ila: There are some rainy evenings when the whole world seems to tuck itself in. The windows shine with little trails of water, the rooms grow dim and golden, and even familiar things feel especially precious. Noam: Like the one thing you want to keep very close. Ila: Exactly. On one such evening, Malti was curled beneath her blanket in her cozy bedroom. Rain tapped softly at the window. In her arms was her stuffed rabbit, worn smooth from so many hugs. Noam: Her bedtime rabbit. Ila: Her bedtime rabbit. Malti held one long ear between her fingers. When rain made the house sound bigger than usual, the rabbit made her feel safe. He had helped her fall asleep on nights when shadows seemed too dark, or when thunder rumbled far away. Noam: So she really loved him. Ila: She did. Then there was a small knock at the door. Noam: Oh. Ila: It was Noor, Malti’s younger neighbor. Noor stood in the doorway with damp shoes and a hopeful, quiet face. Her hair was a little wet around her forehead. She looked past Malti, straight toward the rabbit. Noam: Malti noticed that. Ila: She did. And for a moment, Malti pulled the rabbit closer. Not angrily. Just carefully. This was her rabbit. Her comfort. Her soft, familiar friend. Noam: It can be hard to share something that helps you feel safe. Ila: Yes. Malti felt that little tug inside her. One part of her wanted to keep the rabbit tucked under her chin, exactly where he belonged. But then she looked again at Noor’s wet shoes, making two dark marks on the floor. Noam: Noor had come through the rain. Ila: And Noor was standing very still, as if she did not want to ask for too much. Noam: Mm. Sometimes people ask with their eyes first. Ila: Malti paused. She took one slow breath. Then, instead of deciding all at once, she made one small choice. She lifted the corner of her blanket. Noam: A little space. Ila: A little space. Noor came and sat beside her on the bed. Their shoulders did not quite touch at first. The rain continued its soft tapping. Malti could feel the rabbit in her hands, and she could still feel how much she wanted to hold him close. Noam: But she didn’t have to give away all her comfort. Ila: No. She only had to share a little of it. Malti placed the rabbit between them and let Noor hold one of his paws. Noam: One paw each. Ila: One paw each. Noor’s fingers curled gently around the rabbit’s soft paw. After a while, Noor’s shoulders loosened. Malti noticed that the rabbit still felt warm in her arms. Noam: Maybe warmer. Ila: Maybe warmer. Malti had not lost her safe feeling. It had changed. It had grown large enough for two children under one blanket, while rain whispered against the window. Noam: And Malti could feel proud of her small choice. Ila: Warm, proud, and soothed. Just like the rabbit between them. Noam: Goodnight, Malti. Goodnight, Noor. Ila: And goodnight to you. Sleep softly.
