Guard the Good Deposit

Adele: Imagine a valley after rain. The soil is dark and fragrant, and when the light reaches it, tiny stones flash beneath your feet, red, blue, gold. Fruit trees bend low at the edges of the field. And no gate stands at the entrance. Anyone can wander in. Silas: Mm. A beautiful gift, and also an exposed one. Adele: Yes. At first, the valley feels generous, almost carefree. Then seasons turn. Dry winds come. Strangers begin walking the boundary lines, not admiring the trees, but measuring them. You can almost feel it, can’t you? The question hiding in the grass: who will guard what is precious? Silas: Paul gives Timothy that question in a very personal way. Second Timothy 1:14 says, “By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.” Adele: The good deposit. Not something Timothy manufactured. Something placed in his hands. Silas: Exactly. And our gifts are like that. A tender heart. A calling. Wisdom. Creativity. The ability to serve, to teach, to listen. Precious, yes, but without grace, uh, they can be exposed to pride, fear, exhaustion, or people who want to use them for their own purposes. Adele: So guarding is not clutching the gift to our chest. Silas: No. It is bringing it under Christ’s lordship. Saying, “Jesus, this came from You. Cover it. Direct it. Keep my heart clean as I carry it.” Adele: Today, name one gift God has entrusted to you. Just one. And invite Christ to stand watch over that little valley. Silas: He is faithful to guard what we surrender. Next time, we’ll talk about what it means to tend that guarded ground.

Adele: Last time, we stood over the field and named the gift as God’s deposit. Today, we are at the valley’s edge, where the ground is rich... and the fence looks almost too simple. Silas: Until night comes. Adele: Exactly. A fence says, “This land is not abandoned.” And beyond it, a watchtower rises. Not to make the field anxious, but to keep it covered. A gifted life can be like that soil, full of seed and usefulness, yet exposed when Christ is kept at the gate instead of welcomed as Lord. Silas: That is why Paul says in 2 Timothy 1:14, “By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.” We guard it, yes, but never alone. The Holy Spirit is not a distant patrol. He dwells within us. Adele: So surrender is not building higher fences by our own effort? Silas: No. It is bringing every acre under Christ’s rule, our talent, motives, choices, even the hidden places. Then the Spirit guards what grace has given. Psalm 91 pictures the one who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, resting under His shadow. Adele: And the guarded field begins to show its true harvest, Galatians’ fruit, love, peace, self-control. Not frantic striving... living evidence that the Holy Host is near. Silas: One daily habit, read a short passage of Scripture each morning, then text one trusted believer one honest sentence about how you will obey it today. Adele: Let’s pray. Lord Jesus, take every part of us under Your lordship. By Your Holy Spirit, guard the good You have entrusted to us, and grow Your fruit in us. Amen. Silas: Amen. Keep the gate open to Christ, and keep the gift under His guard.
