Episode 1 · The Night That Felt Too Big
Maren: Sometimes, when the last bit of daylight slips behind the hills, the night can feel very, very big. Owen: Bigger than it really is, somehow. Especially when you’re small. Maren: In a quiet valley, where the evening air smelled cool and soft, lived a small blue dragon named Ember. Ember loved the daytime. She liked warm sun on her scales and bright paths she could see all the way down. Owen: Night was harder for her? Maren: Mm-hm. When dusk came, Ember would hurry to her mossy little hollow. She’d curl her tail close, tuck her wings around herself, and listen. Owen: Listen for what? Maren: For all the night sounds that seemed louder after dark. A rustle far away. A little echo in the valley. Even the shadows felt as though they were stretching longer than they should. Owen: Poor Ember. Shadows can be tricky. They look so certain, even when they’re only shadows. Maren: That’s just what Ember thought. She peeked out from her hollow, then quickly tucked herself back in. “I wish night were smaller,” she whispered. Owen: Oh, Ember. Maren: Then... across the dim valley floor, she saw something moving. Owen: Something moving? Maren: A warm, golden lantern light. Slow and gentle. It drifted closer and closer, glowing like a tiny piece of daytime that had forgotten to go away. Owen: Was Ember scared? Maren: A little. But she was curious, too. The light stopped near her hollow. Owen: And then? Maren: Then a soft voice began to speak... Owen: We’ll find out who carries that warm little light next time. Until then, perhaps Ember won’t have to face the big night all by herself.
Episode 2 · A Friend Who Knows the Dark
Maren: Last time, in "The Night That Felt Too Big," we met Ember, a shy young dragon, worrying that night was too big... while a curious light waited beyond her hollow. Owen: Mm. I remember. She wanted to look, but, uh, only from somewhere very safe. Maren: Then a soft voice said, "Hello. May I sit nearby?" Ember held her breath, then peeked out. Maren: On a mossy stone sat Ori, a tiny, kindly firefly-keeper, carrying a lantern of glass and moon-dust. It glowed like a sleepy star. Owen: So the light was a friend... a new one. Maren: "Are you afraid of the night?" Ori asked. "Which part feels biggest?" Owen: That's a gentle question. Sometimes "all of it" is the truest answer. Maren: Ember whispered, "All of it." Ori offered a warm cup of chamomile glow. "We can notice one small thing at a time." Maren: Ember sipped. Silver dew shone on the grass. Sleeping trees stood hushed, and a nearby owl blinked... softly, once, then again. Owen: The dark wasn't empty. It was full of quiet things, you know, resting together. Maren: Ember's wings fluttered. Then, um, she stepped outside the hollow. One paw, then the other. She followed Ori's lantern a few paces. Owen: Not all the way into the night. Just enough to meet it. Maren: "I can be here," Ember said. Ori smiled. "You don't have to be brave all at once." Maren: And beneath that small lantern, the night felt less like a great unknown... and more like a friend who knew the dark. Owen: Sleep softly, little listeners. Good night.
