ClaraNice. Tiny unpack, only because it helps. Bon means good, and jour means day. So, literally, good day. And the j sound in jour is like the English zh sound, like in measure.
TheoSo not a hard j, not jorrr. More like zhoor.
ClaraYes. And for now, you do not need a fancy nasal sound in bon. A clear Bonjour is absolutely fine. Listener, your turn, hello, good day, Bonjour.

ClaraGood. Next one, casual hi, or bye, is Salut.
TheoSalut.
ClaraAlso a useful little fact, salut comes from a word about health. We’ll leave it there. For now, just keep the meaning attached, casual hi, bye, Salut.
TheoSo if I say Bonjour, I sound neutral and safe. If I say Salut, I sound more casual.
ClaraThat’s the key distinction we need today, yes. Listener, repeat, casual hi, bye, Salut.

ClaraNow, I am, is Je suis.
TheoJe suis.
ClaraMicro-parts. Je means I. The j is that same zh sound. Suis means am. And that form comes from the verb être, to be.
TheoOkay, I’m going to make the mistake for everyone. Why is it not, like, je am?
ClaraBecause French packages it as Je suis. Best beginner move, memorize the whole chunk, I am, Je suis.
